Other than traffic offenses, the number one crime in Douglas County is domestic violence. The following information about domestic violence has been provided by the The Women's Crisis Center
- Domestic Violence is the number one violent crime in Douglas County.
- 14 of 17 homicides in the past 10 years have a factual basis of domestic violence.
- Through a variety of services and programs, the Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center reaches approximately 10,000 people a year.
- The average adult client at the Center is 37 years old, has two children and makes less than $10,000 a year.
- Although we usually associate domestic violence with physical violence, the impact of emotional, verbal, spiritual and sexual violence is significant on a victim. The invisible scars of domestic violence are deep.
- A child’s response to witnessing their mother being abused is the same as if they were abused themselves.
- The average shelter stay at the WCFOC is 21 days.
- Approximately 75% of shelter clients do not return to their violence partner once they leave our shelter.
