Douglas County Libraries is offering a new series of business programs to complement its BizInfo suite of services. DCL will offer at least three programs each month targeting entrepreneurs and small business owners. Click on Read More below for topics, dates and locations.

The Castle Pines Business Book Club will meet at the Castle Pines Chamber of Commerce at 11:30 a.m. the first Thursday of each month. The Highlands Ranch Business Book Club meets the same day at noon at Tattered Cover Book Store in the Highlands Ranch Town Center.

Bonfils Blood Drives @ Your Library

Douglas County Libraries has formed a “partnership for life” with Bonfils Blood Center and will be holding blood drives throughout 2010. Bonfils needs 4,200 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for unexpected events.

Blood Donation is one of the easiest ways to help your community, with each whole blood donation taking less than an hour and having the potential to help several people.

Reservations are handled through Bonfils. Call 303-363-2300 to book your spot, or visit www.bonfils.org.

Donation Brings Renovation to Parker Library

A patron’s donation will pay for much-needed renovations to Parker Library set to begin this month.

When Parker Library opened in 1996, it served fewer than 20,000 people. It now serves a population of about 84,000. With this construction, the library will expand its children's area and update the entry area adding more room to the crowded facility.

Douglas County Libraries Director, Jamie LaRue, says “If you've tried to get into the parking lot lately, you know that it just isn't big enough. But after two failed elections to address the issue, Douglas County Libraries doesn't have the money to build or rent a larger building. What's a service-minded library district to do? Answer: re-imagine the space. Thanks to a private donation, we'll be able to do a make-over at almost half the price.”

Construction could last through early 2010 and brings several changes to services and programs:

Raising Financially Responsible Kids

A piggy bank is just the first step toward raising a money-smart child.

Learn tips for engaging kids to become financially responsible. This program focuses on helping parents teach their children the value of money, and how to become financially responsible adults. Hosted by New York Life and based on the program created by noted financial expert, television personality, and New York Times Best Selling Author Neale S. Godfrey.

The program will address age-appropriate ways to teach kids to:

Earn and appreciate an allowance
Develop good savings and investing habits
Separate wants and needs
Become disciplined shoppers
View advertising critically
